Intro to Photography – Seeing What Is “Very Good”
What photography is

“God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good.”
Everything around us was created with purpose and beauty. Photography is a way for us to slow down, notice those details, and capture what God has already called “very good.”
What is Photography? 📸
Photography is more than just taking pictures. It is the art of seeing. A camera helps capture moments, but a photographer learns to notice beauty, detail, and meaning in the world around them.
In the very beginning, God created everything and called it “very good.” That means beauty is all around us every single day. Sometimes we move too fast to notice it, but photography helps us slow down and truly see what God has made.
As photographers, we are learning to train our eyes to notice light, color, texture, and moments that others might miss. This class will help you grow not just in skill, but in awareness. You will begin to see the world differently.
Photography Icebreaker Scavenger Hunt: “Getting to Know Our Class”
Goal
Learn about your classmates while practicing how to notice details, capture personality, and tell simple visual stories through photography.
Instructions
You will move around the classroom and respectfully take photos of classmates or their chosen items. Always ask permission before photographing someone. Be kind, respectful, and encouraging while you work.
Try to capture natural moments rather than posed “stiff” photos when possible.
Scavenger Hunt List
Find and photograph:
- A classmate with a hairstyle you think is cool or unique
- A pair of shoes you like (can be yours or someone else’s with permission)
- Someone wearing a color you are drawn to or enjoy
- A piece of jewelry or accessory that stands out (earrings, watch, necklace, bracelet, etc.)
- A classmate’s eye color up close (be respectful and ask first)
- A shirt or outfit you think has a strong style or design
- A smiling boy in the class
- A smiling girl in the class
- An item someone brought from home that says something about their personality
- A creative or interesting “detail shot” of anything in the classroom (texture, pattern, object, corner, etc.)
Challenge Shots (if you finish early)
• Capture a candid moment of laughter or conversation
• Take a photo that shows friendship or connection between two classmates
• Find something in the room that most people would normally overlook
Reflection (to share at the end)
Choose one photo you took and answer:
• Why did you choose to photograph this?
• What did you learn about your classmates while doing this activity?
• Did you notice anything new about your environment today?
Homework
Take 3 photos of things you believe are “very good.”
Upload your photos and explain why you chose them. Write what makes something “very good” to you?
Is it the way it looks, the memory it holds, or the feeling it gives you?
Encouragement
Remember, you don’t need a fancy camera to be a great photographer. You just need your eyes, your creativity, and a heart that notices what God has made.
