What Is Light?

Genesis 1:3

“Then God said, ‘Let there be light,’ and there was light.”

What Is Light in Photography?

Did you know that without light, we couldn't take pictures?

Light is one of the most important parts of photography! It helps us see our subjects, creates shadows, and changes how our photographs look and feel.

When YAH created the world, one of the first things He said was, “Let there be light!” Just as light helps us see the world around us, photographers use light to show the beauty of YAH's creation.

Light vs. Dark Photography

Bright Photography

Lots of light makes photographs look cheerful, clear, and colorful.

Dark Photography

Less light creates shadows, mystery, and dramatic effects.

Three Things Light Can Do
  • Make things brighter: More light helps us see details and colors.

  • Create shadows: When something blocks light, it creates a shadow.

  • Change the mood: Bright photos can feel happy and energetic. Dark photos can feel mysterious or peaceful.

Class Game: Light vs. Dark Photo Challenge

Your mission: Become a light detective! You will take pictures of the same subject using different lighting.

Round 3: Shadow Detective!

Use a flashlight or nearby light to create an interesting shadow. Take a picture that includes the shadow.

Let's Compare!

Show your favorite two photographs to the class and answer these questions:

  1. Which photograph has the most light?

  2. Which photograph has the most shadows?

  3. How did the lighting change the way your subject looked?

  4. Which photograph is your favorite, and why?

Homework: Two Lighting Styles

Take 2 photographs of the same subject using two different lighting styles.

  • Photo 1: Bright lighting, using sunlight or a well-lit room.

  • Photo 2: Dark or dramatic lighting, using shadows or a small light source.

Bonus Challenge: Try to make your two photographs tell different stories just by changing the light!

Remember: A great photographer doesn't just look for interesting things to photograph. A great photographer looks for interesting light!
