Choose Your Business Idea

James 1:5

“If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives to all generously and without criticizing, and it will be given to him.”

Sometimes we have several good choices and do not immediately know which direction to take. James 1:5 reminds us that we can ask YAH for wisdom. As entrepreneurs, we want to use wisdom instead of simply choosing whatever idea seems easiest or most exciting.

Focus: Choosing the best business idea as a team

You have brainstormed several possible solutions. Now it is time to decide which idea your team will turn into a business.

A good entrepreneur does not choose an idea just because it sounds fun. Entrepreneurs think about whether their idea actually solves the problem they identified and whether people would want or need the solution.

Today, your team will evaluate each of your top ideas by asking three important questions:

  1. Is it useful? Does this idea actually solve the problem?
  2. Is it realistic? Could we reasonably create, sell, or provide this product or service?
  3. Is it needed? Are there people who would actually benefit from it?
In-Class Activity: Business Idea Decision

Look at your team's top two ideas from last week's brainstorming activity.

For each idea, discuss:

Question Idea #1 Idea #2
What problem does it solve?
Who would use it?
Is it useful? Why?
Is it realistic? Why?
Is it needed? Why?
What could make it difficult?

After discussing both ideas, your team must come to a final decision together.

Be ready to tell the class:

“We chose __________ because it solves __________ for __________.”

Homework: Write Your Solution Clearly

Write 2–3 sentences explaining:

The problem: What problem are you solving?
The customer: Who has this problem?
The solution: What will your business provide?

Example: Busy families sometimes do not have time to prepare healthy meals. Our business will provide affordable, ready-to-eat healthy meals that families can order each week.
