Psalm 19:1

“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky proclaims the work of His hands.”

Psalm 19:1 reminds us that creation reveals the glory of YAH. When we photograph the sky, mountains, trees, or oceans, we are capturing a small part of His amazing creation.
As photographers, we can use our cameras to help others notice beauty they might normally overlook.
Think About It: How can your photography help someone appreciate YAH's creation?

What Is Landscape Photography?

Landscape photography is the art of capturing outdoor scenes that show the beauty of nature and the world around us. Instead of focusing on one person or object, landscape photography captures a larger view of a place.

Landscape photography can include mountains, forests, lakes, beaches, fields, sunsets, and even city skylines.

Types of Landscape Photography by Style and Composition

Types of Landscape Photography by Style and Composition

1. Grand Landscape: Captures a wide, breathtaking view of nature, such as mountains, valleys, oceans, or vast open spaces. Shows the big picture.

2. Intimate Landscape: Focuses on a smaller section of a landscape, such as a group of trees, a winding stream, or a small area of a forest.

3. Detailed Landscape: Captures close-up details found in nature, such as the texture of tree bark, patterns in rocks, leaves, or flowing water.

4. Abstract Landscape: Focuses on shapes, colors, lines, patterns, and textures rather than showing an entire recognizable scene.

5. Minimalist Landscape: Uses very few elements to create a simple but powerful photograph, such as one tree in an empty field.

6. Panoramic Landscape: Captures an extremely wide scene, often by combining multiple photographs into one image.

7. Dramatic Landscape: Uses bold lighting, storm clouds, shadows, or strong contrast to create an emotional or powerful image.

8. Atmospheric Landscape: Captures the mood of a scene using fog, mist, haze, soft light, or unusual weather.

9. Layered Landscape: Uses foreground, middle ground, and background to create depth and guide the viewer's eye through the photograph.

10. Fine Art Landscape: Uses creative composition, lighting, and editing to express an artistic vision rather than simply document a location.

The small details

1. Capture the Big Picture

Landscape photography often uses a wide shot to capture as much of the scenery as possible.

A wide shot helps viewers understand the location and see how different elements work together.

Tips for wide shots:

  • Hold your camera horizontally to capture more scenery.

  • Look for interesting skies, trees, mountains, or buildings.

  • Avoid cutting off important parts of the scene.

  • Keep your horizon straight.

2. Create Depth in Your Photos

Depth makes a flat photograph appear three-dimensional. It helps the viewer feel like they could step into the picture.

One way to create depth is to include three layers:

1. Foreground

Closest to the camera, such as flowers or rocks.

2. Middle Ground
Between the front and back, such as a lake or field.

3. Background
Farthest away, such as mountains or the sky.

Photography Tip: Try placing something interesting in the foreground. This can make your landscape photograph feel more immersive.

3. Use the Rule of Thirds

Remember the Rule of Thirds from our earlier lessons?

Imagine dividing your photo into nine equal sections using two horizontal and two vertical lines.

When photographing landscapes, try placing the horizon along the top or bottom horizontal line instead of directly in the middle.

4. Pay Attention to Lighting

Lighting can completely change how a landscape looks.

Photography Tip: Golden hour is often a great time to capture beautiful outdoor landscapes.

5. Camera Tips for Landscape Photography

Whether you are using a DSLR camera or a smartphone, these tips can help you capture better landscapes.

  • Aperture: Try f/8 to f/11 on a camera with adjustable aperture to keep more of the scene sharp.

  • ISO: Start with ISO 100 or 200 in bright outdoor conditions.

  • Focus: Focus on an important part of the landscape, often around one-third of the way into the scene.

  • Stability: Hold your camera steady or use a tripod when needed.

  • Composition: Look around before taking your photo. Sometimes moving a few steps makes a big difference.

In-Class Activity: Landscape Photography Challenge

Photography Challenge: Grand, Intimate & Detailed Landscapes

Today, you will practice photographing outdoor scenes using three different landscape photography styles. Your goal is to discover how the same location can tell different stories depending on what you choose to photograph.

Photography Checklist

  • Grand Landscape: Take a wide photograph that captures the entire scene. Show as much of the environment as possible.
  • Intimate Landscape: Focus on a smaller, interesting section of the landscape, such as a group of trees, a garden, or a winding pathway.
  • Detailed Landscape: Move closer and capture a small detail in nature, such as the texture of tree bark, a leaf, a flower, or an interesting rock.
  • Creative Choice: Take one additional photograph using any of the three styles. Experiment with lighting, composition, or camera angles to make it unique.

Partner Discussion

After taking your photographs, choose your favorite and discuss these questions with a partner:

  1. Which landscape style did you use: Grand, Intimate, or Detailed?
  2. What is the main subject of your photograph?
  3. How does your composition help draw attention to your subject?
  4. Which style was the easiest and which was the most challenging? Why?
  5. How can photographing nature help us appreciate YAH's creation?

Challenge: Can you photograph the same location using all three landscape styles without moving to a different area?

Homework

Assignment: Take three landscape photographs outdoors.

Your three photos should demonstrate:

  1. Wide Landscape: Capture a large outdoor scene.

  2. Depth: Include a clear foreground and background.

  3. Creative Composition: Use the Rule of Thirds, interesting lighting, or a unique camera angle.

Requirements: Submit three different photographs to Google Classroom. Choose your best images, check that they are in focus, and make sure your horizon is straight.

Final Reflection

The next time you look at a beautiful sunset, a field of flowers, or a sky filled with clouds, remember Psalm 19:1.

YAH's creation is full of details worth noticing. Photography gives us an opportunity to slow down, observe, and share that beauty with others.

Question to Think About: What part of YAH's creation do you most enjoy photographing, and why?
